Ecoles Nationale dba Lyon École Nationale Superieur des Beaux Arts in Lyon (FR)

Jonathan Rouah, graphic design
École Nationale Superieur des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, France

I did a first three years program in Ecoles de Condé in Lyon. Then a second one in the École Nationale Superieur des Beaux-Arts in the same city. It might be more interesting to talk about the second one actually.

1. The time of your studies?
Five years in total.

2. What exactly did you study there, and what other possibilities does the school offer?
I studied graphic design, typography but also multimedia and web design. Though we spent not much time on the two last things.
There is a complete applied arts department with:
- graphic design
- textile design
- space design
- product design
And also the regular Art master. Particularly focused on installations, photography and video…

3. Why did you choose this school?
I went there because It was the best and more coherent way to continue what I started in the first school (which was more academic and linked to the government. Which means that you have to follow a program decided by a Minister…). The Fine Arts school just moved in a new fantastic building, lots of possibilities offered to the student and quite some liberty. It was (and still is) an ambitious school through the will of the director.

4. Name 3 things you liked there.

The screen printing workshop.
The one color offset press.
The library.
(but the structure is so big that there’s also an artist residence, and cultural events happening all along the year.)

5. 3 things that could be improved?
Better interaction between sections.
The way to get some food (might seems a detail but…)
Some more efficient workshop animators.

6. Which schools would you recommend to other designers?
In Lyon this one for sure. Otherwise in France… There’re a lot. Basically the biggest are in Paris (Arts Déco, Estienne…) but there’re good schools in some other parts of the territory.
Feel free to ask for more a bit more specifically.

7. What is the language of study?

Well… French.

8. How much does it cost per year?
I would say around 400 or 500 euros per year. It’s a public school.

9. What do you need to get in?
A final highschool exam (what we call a “Baccalauréat”). The school has a lot of Erasmus collaborations all over the world.
