Intervija ar grafisko dizaineri Anatoliju Vjalih, kurš šobrīd studē Maskavā.

1. Tell me about yourself — who are you, where do you come from, what drives you? Maybe you could mention how did you arrive in Moscow?
What to start with. My name is Anatoly Vyalikh, I’m 21. I was born in capital of Latvia, Riga, and after that moved to Latvian second biggest city Daugavpils. I always wanted to connect by profession with something creative. Design or architecture. I thought not only about graphic design, because always was interested in all kinds of design. I took pencil when I was less than 1 year old and since that time almost never took it off from my hand =)

Now I study in Moscow in British Higher School of Art and Design. It is a branch of University of Hertfordshire, in a visual communication and graphic design faculty. Moscow wasn’t my first option. First I prepared documents for Finnish and Netherlands universities but in one day I changed my mind. (In Netherlands I wanted to study in Hanzehogeschool Groningen, but in Finland – in University of Art and Design Helsinki.)
I like that here in the British Higher School of Art and Design we have English and Russian tutors and we can compare their opinions and learn different approaches. Both are good and both are interesting. Russian is based more on the visual, but English adores ideas. I have chosen Moscow cause it is the capital of country where I was born (USSR). It is interesting for me to try to combine the independent life in Russia, where I need to do all by myself, with studying in English language in a British university.
After the silent and natural Latvia with its 2 millions of citizens, 15 million Moscow revolt push off by many things. It is very alive and interesting city, where you can in find what to do all the time, starting with classical music concerts and ending with exhibitions.
I am interested in a lot of things. I like tasty food, but I’m not a fan of meat and fish. I like to drive a car, but at the same time I like bike. I like to go sleep late, to sleep a lot, but I like mornings too. I am interested in almost everything in the World. But in my life I prevent loutish behavior, platitude, severity, lie, mediocrity, abuse, levity, alcohol, drugs and cigarettes. All these are unnatural for me.
From early childhood I took inspiration from nature, old movies, history, architecture, music.
Now besides all enumerated above, I am very inspired by finding problems and then solving them.

2. What is design for you?
First of all design for me is a possibility to change this world and to make it better, although of course I understand that it is almost impossible, but I believe and know, that I will succeed in it. And second, design is a possibility to realize and embody in reality my thoughts, ideas and my inner world. As far as my viewpoint is concerned, any work of designer needs to be a reflection of his thoughts. Otherwise the world and design around it become similar to each other. Although it is happening already, there are trends, which are followed by many people, sticked in globalization.
But in general design is everything. It is everywhere, in every trifle. It is very important that design is not only visually attractive, but also brings a solution for problems and aims.

3. What do you consider worthy of attention in Latvian design?
As in everything in this world, there are bad and good examples in Latvian design. I am gratified, that Latvian design, unlike most others, succumbs to the moment of globalization in a less degree and gathers the inspiration from the past, from the history of our country to a large extent. This aspect in my opinion is very important.
About my favorite Latvian designers work: Latvian 90 anniversaries logotype and visual look made my day. To my mind it is alive and perfectly shows mood of this holiday and country’s folklore.

4. What are you busy with when not working?
I always try to self-improve and learn something, for example to draw, make sketches, explore new graphic software and methods of working. Basically it can be anything, even not connected with design and illustration: reading fiction books, professional books and articles, traveling in new places and going to the nature, walks. Also I like to be wide awake of everything what happens in the world. I think that designer must be interested in everything, to have a personal opinion and with the help of visual language put it into the life, and so to attend attention of community to the significant things.
Indeed mainly society is middling.

5. What is the path to becoming a good designer?
To my thinking everyone must study, study and study again. Must not stay in one place, but always self-improve and move forward. Then everything will be perfect. One more thing, designers has to forget about modesty.

6. What do you do when you are “stuck”?
When I don’t have an inspiration I find help in doing something different. For example go to the classical music concert in philharmony or to watch a movie or simply walk somewhere. But such days without inspiration are rare for me. Usually I always find solution of posed problems and new exercises for myself.
There are always plenty of ideas, that is why it’s impossible for me to stay in one place =)

7. How do you know when a piece of work is “ready” and that you are satisfied with the result?
This happens when I start to like the work that I have done. For example today I finished making postcards for my university project. The aim was to make postcards with topic “From Russia with luck“. I chose to show some symbols of Russian history like Olympic games 1980 mascot bear Misha etc. Because of time limit the idea is quite simple. I emphasized the visual part of the work. I like the result, but I know that it could be better. Also now I’m working on visual identity of city of Daugavpils. The biggest part of the work is already finished, but because of long term of this project, I decided to change almost everything. Ideas develop and my viewpoint as well.

8. Three things you really like and would recommend to others.
First of all its books, not only about design, but also fiction. I prefer old fiction. It develops not only the creative thinking and mind, but also they are interesting to read. Secondly, — old movies filmed before the 80’s. Cinema in general is absolutely appalling thing. And thirdly, it’s nature, infinite source of knowledge and inspiration.

10. Can you imagine what will happen to Latvia in 5 years time? What are your plans?
A difficult question. I need to imagine myself in the quality or Vanga or Nostradamus =)
To my mind in the near future nothing good will happen in Latvia. There were hopes, that country finally will start to develop and grow, but it emerged that this was all false. After 5 years everything will change if there will be new people coming into the government. People, who will not think first and foremost about money, how to earn it and how to crook it. By the way, everything is in our hands and now, when country is in crisis, we need to study, catch experience abroad, and then come back here and lift up Latvia together.
Latvia is our motherland and after some time I might be willing to return to it.

My plans are huge and grand, almost to conquer the World =) I will not tell all of them =)
But the nearest are such: continue participating in the contests and exhibitions, self-improve, realize personal projects and make business, to finish university, and collect a strong portfolio by that time and to declare about myself to all World.

Linda, GOD and humanity will not fgvoire us if we don’t rise against this misplaced justice. This is wot social media is used for. We must speak up against this kind of wicked acts and spread the word until someone hears and acts. Is this man’s act worst than those of the demons that rule, steal and kill us in our entirety? Sponsors of terrorism still seat in hallow chambers, promoters of iniquity still rule our lands and one poor man’s huzzle is classified capital crime……he did wrong but nothing near wot theses bastids r doing to us everyday. Pls let’s use this forum to set that captive free. LET OUR VOICES SPEAK FOR THAT MAN THAT CAN’T SPEAK FOR HIMSELF

Helllo, sombody wake me up and tell me its all a bad dream. A man stole N1,705. and 400 naira milk and is going to be hagned? Excuse me, please whats happening. Something is terribly wrong with the justice system of nigeria. That man doesnt deserve to die, yes he stole and should be punished but not hagned. In all, what he stole is not up to N2,500.00 worth.
